World first: ultrasonic testing provides highly accurate bearing life predictions Following years of R&D, #NSK is revising the basic dynamic load rating of many bearings by up to double the equivalent rolling contact fatigue life (with no change in design or materials). We are the first company in 60 years to make a significant breakthrough in #bearing life calculation techniques, helping end users to improve productivity and boost environmental protection.   Partnering with Kyushu University, our expert engineers developed a quantitative evaluation method that could determine which factors influenced the process of crack propagation in a material, and to what extent. By combining the new method with an ultrasonic inspection technique that scans the non-metallic inclusions in a large volume of steel, we are able to predict bearing life with far higher accuracy. NSK Active Caster suits diverse range of mobile robot applications To help get robots into more and more workplaces, operating side-by-side with humans, a team of expert development engineers here at NSK have come up with a novel way to improve the mobility of mobile robots: the NSK Active Caster. This innovative omnidirectional motorised drive unit, which is ready for use in a diverse range of autonomous service robot applications, could soon come to the assistance of countries facing ageing populations and labour shortages. Suitable for use in close proximity to people, Active Casters fitted to service robots are currently undergoing field tests and could shortly play a role in workplaces around the globe. The units feature two motors per wheel, and control steering and motion through the difference in their rotational speeds. Moving forward, we will continue to enhance the design by applying our extensive know-how in bearing and lubrication technology. NSK bearings help pet food plant boost OEE When a major UK pet food producer wanted better machine utilisation with the aim of raising its OEE by 3 points, it asked our experts here at NSK if they could evaluate processes and systems to help with this improvement goal. Process mapping as part of our #AIP Added Value Programme identified five areas for OEE improvement, beginning with the plant’s pellet extruder, where bearing failures were occurring every 10-12 weeks. Our experts recommended high-viscosity oil for longer life and the use of high-quality #NSK EA-series spherical roller bearings, as well as spherical thrust roller bearings. The extruder subsequently ran for 7 months without any bearing failures, delivering cost saving of £70,000 due to reductions in production downtime and maintenance. World-class calculation software programs adopt NSK bearing data NSK will begin providing rolling bearing data to MESYS and KISSsoft, two industry-leading companies that develop technical calculation software for engineers engaged in machinery design. The integration of #NSK bearing data will accelerate the design process through quick and easy bearing analysis, reducing the time taken to select bearings. Our data will initially span five bearing types: deep groove ball bearings, angular contact ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, tapered roller bearings and spherical roller bearings. Software users will simply call up NSK #bearing information from the database and perform technical calculations involving shafts, gears or housings, for example. NSK bearings deliver major savings at snack food plant   When a major snack food producer began experiencing repeat failures of the bearings on its cutter lines, a switch to our Life-Lube® bearing units delivered savings in excess of €130,000.   As part of NSK’s Added Value Programme, AIP, a process map survey was conducted encompassing an investigation of the failed bearings by NSK’s engineering team. This activity identified grease expulsion as the problem due to line wash-down procedures. We proposed replacing the incumbent bearings with our Life-Lube® housed bearing units on one cutter line. After 12 months, the bearings were still performing well with no failures, eliminating production downtime entirely. Alongside lower costs for parts and maintenance labour, the plant is seeing impressive annual savings of €134,478.
